One can hear the “sounds of the ocean” in a shell because of resonance, and the phenomenon is called “seashell resonance”; one can simply summarize it as that the shell amplifies the “noises surrounding the ears”. Actually, in our daily lives, we have been surrounded by all kinds of noises: the sound of the wind around us, the buzzing of electronics, the sound of cars passing by, and more. All these sounds in our surroundings accumulate to form noises with regular frequency (white noise).
According to a physics principle, if vibration or a sound’s frequency outside a shell resembles the existing frequency inside the shell chamber, resonance will occur, and it will amplify the sound. As we cover our ear with a shell, a resonance chamber will be formed; depending on the shell's shape and size, sounds of certain frequencies will be amplified. As the shell collects all surrounding sound waves near the ear, resonance will be formed inside the shell. Since the air vibration inside a shell may rise or fall, the resonant sounds would resemble sounds of ocean waves; so people develop this wonderful illusion and believe that they are sounds of the ocean.
